Fabrication of Heavy Impact Test Theater Components

The National Research Council of Canada’s Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering Research Centre (NRC-OCRE) has a requirement for the fabrication and delivery of mechanical components for the NRC-OCRE’s Heavy Impact Test Theater (HITT). The requirement includes the manufacturing of a modular Hammer assembly, Anvil assembly, Free Sway System, and Surge Restraint System in accordance with NRC engineering drawings and specifications.

BACKGROUND
NRC-OCRE is developing the HITT to support full scale ice impact testing. The facility requires precision fabricated structural components including a modular hammer system, a polyethylene anvil assembly, and steel guidance and restraint systems. These components must be manufactured to meet specified design loads while maintaining modularity, durability, and repeatable performance during impact testing. This requirement will provide the fabrication and delivery of the primary structural assemblies required for the HITT facility.

REQUIREMENTS
The Contractor must fabricate, assemble where applicable, and deliver the following components:
1. Hammer Assembly
The Hammer Assembly must consist of a modular welded steel structure designed for impact loading. The assembly includes:

  • A modular frame composed of sixteen (16) steel cube modules
  • Stiffened steel plates
  • Internal load transfer frame components

All welds and structural elements must meet the dimensional tolerances and load requirements specified in the NRC drawings.
2. Anvil Assembly
The Anvil Assembly consists of a modular polyethylene and aluminum structure designed to interface with the hammer during testing. The assembly includes:

  • Machined low density polyethylene (LDPE) sheets
  • Aluminum structural elements
  • Alignment rods and mounting hardware
  • Load cell mounting provisions

Machining tolerances and surface finishes must comply with the specifications defined in the NRC drawings.
3. Free Sway System
The Free Sway System provides guidance and controlled movement of the hammer assembly. The system includes:

  • Structural steel frame components
  • Guide rails and carriage assemblies
  • Mounting interfaces compatible with the hammer system

The system must ensure stable alignment and controlled motion during operation.
4. Surge Restraint System
The Surge Restraint System is designed to control impact energy and limit structural movement. The system includes:

  • Structural frame components
  • Shock absorber integration
  • Mounting hardware and structural supports

The system must be fabricated in accordance with the NRC drawings and designed to withstand repeated dynamic loading.
