The National Research Council (NRC) in collaboration with Transport Canada (TC) are working on a research project to equip a standard revenue-service freight railcar with several track and vehicle monitoring technologies. Proven technologies will be deployed in initial phases to collect reliable data to be used as a reference to evaluate new technologies, ensure reliability of the results, and to increase the overall benefit and impact of the instrumented railcar to participating railway operators. The NRC has a requirement to procure an industry proven Autonomous Track Geometry Measurement System (ATGMS) for the instrumented railcar, quantity of one. The ATGMS must be capable of being installed onto an NRC provided freight railcar for the purposes of performing unmanned continuous measurement of track geometry with real time data reporting and transfer. The equipped freight railcar with the onboard ATGMS will then be deployed in Canada and operated in an unmanned fashion by Class 1, 2, and 3 Railroads.
