For Agri-Food Science and Technology research programs, various
samples of soil, soil solutions, composts, plant tissues and
bio-fuels are collected and prepared for analyses. The
combustion analyzer is required to rapidly analyze the C, N and
H contents of these samples, with O analyses desired on a subset
of the samples. The analyzer must be able to analyze solid and
liquid samples. There can be 2000-3000 samples for analyses in
a typical year. The analyzer may sit idle for a few months
during the growing season, so the instrument should be able to
be powered off and then be restarted with minimum maintenance.
Other combustion analyzers used in our lab use Helium as a
carrier gas, and for compatibility reasons it would be
advantageous for the CNH analyzer to also use Helium as a
carrier. An instrument that can provide good analytical results
but also minimizes the use of gases, power and any supplemental
reagents would be desirable.
The software will need to be compatible with computers supported
on the Agriculture and Agri-food Canada (AAFC) network.
Software must run on a Windows 7, 64 bit operating system but
also be able to run Windows 8 in anticipation of an upgrade to
the AAFC network. Software that can be installed on a separate
computer for data analysis and upgraded in the future at minimal
cost would be advantageous. We are therefore looking for not
just an instrument, but a package including the instrument that
will meet current and future analytical and data collection
needs with minimal operating costs.
