Full description

The City of Calgary’s Mobility business unit is undertaking a strategic modernization initiative to enhance how roadway pavement conditions are assessed, managed, and utilized for infrastructure decision making. The Automate Assets Condition Inspection Using Emerging Technologies project seeks to implement an AI enabled pavement condition assessment solution that improves the accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of roadway condition data across the city’s roads network.

Today, pavement condition assessment relies primarily on a combination of manual inspections for local (residential) roads and supplemented by laser-based (LCMS) approaches for major roads. While these methods have provided foundational insights, they are increasingly constrained by high labor costs, limited scalability, safety risks to field staff, and variability in inspection results. As the City’s roadway network continues to expand and age, there is a growing need for a more data driven, automated, and scalable solution that supports evidence-based maintenance planning and optimized investment decisions.
