Full description

The Services involve building on previous work, a prototype called Auricle that was done in support of transit safety. The services are meant to find ways to action the learnings from the data and experience. Specifically, the services include designing and testing workshops to build understanding and capacity, determining options for infrastructure and resourcing for ongoing activations, and testing ways and formats to broaden the transit safety narrative.

The Consultant will:
Design and test curriculum and workshops for groups of operations staff (such as bus drivers) and decision-makers to build understanding and capacity to improve wellbeing and safety on transit. They will learn about what came through the first round of Auricle, the themes and the take-aways that transit staff can bring to life in their own roles and practices.

Design and run first workshops to see how they land (what works/doesn’t work, etc), then tweak design and prepare facilitation materials for future rounds.

In the workshops, participants will collaboratively explore scenarios, ideas, and solutions relating to people’s sense of wellbeing in transit spaces.
The consultant will pay attention to which learning materials and spaces prompt curiosity and openness to new practices.

Test and determine the options for infrastructure and resourcing required for Local Listeners (a role within Auricle) to engage in ongoing activations and story collection. Also, to test formats for ongoing collection and sharing of stories back to transit users and the broader public. This includes paying attention to:

The kinds of processes and support that are needed for activations to become a regular occurrence in transit stations.

The ways members of the public interface and interact with stories to broaden perspectives of wellbeing and transit.

The kind of framing and set-up that is needed for people to engage in ways that don’t entrench stereotypes, and that help to navigate the painful stories.

Test ways and formats to broaden the transit safety narrative. This could include testing data-thons, joint analysis and generative brainstorming sessions with transit riders, bus drivers, station staff, neighbours, community organisations, and policymakers at each of the three transit stations involved in the 2023 round of Auricle. This involves paying attention to the ways in which Auricle data can help stakeholders’ widen the viewfinder and unlock more meaningful multi-stakeholder collaboration.

The Consultant shall provide to the City:
A facilitation guide for ongoing workshops for groups of operations staff (such as bus drivers) and decision-makers to build understanding and capacity to improve wellbeing and safety on transit. The guide shall include information on which learning materials and spaces prompt curiosity and openness to new practices.

A report/activation playbook with options for infrastructure and resourcing required for Local Listeners (a role within Auricle) to engage in ongoing activations and story collection. This report will include recommendations for ongoing collection and sharing of stories back to transit users and the broader public and will include information on how to spread a convivial and welcoming ethos, as well as information on points 2.1.2.1 - 2.1.2.3.

A report with information on ways and formats to broaden the transit safety narrative. It will include lessons learned from the testing of such ideas during the course of this contract.
