Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) through its Ecosystem Sciences Division to fulfil its mandates under the Ocean Protection Plan Whale Detection and Collision Avoidance Initiative (OPP-WDCA) is looking to test the performance of technologies for whale detection in near real-time in key locations in Southern Resident Killer Whale (SRKW) critical habitat in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Swiftsure Bank off the West Coast of Vancouver Island. The main objective of the work proposed in this contract is to design and produce an automated infrared (IR)/visual marine mammal detection system with integrated RADAR vessel detection system using equipment owned by DFO, train DFO personnel remotely to install the system, develop a remote online monitoring protocol and test detection effectiveness and update detection training algorithms for different marine mammal species.
