Fisheries and Oceans Canada is the owner of assets which support the various programs within the department. One such asset is the Cove Island Lighthouse site located at the northern end of Cove Island, approximately 10 km North – Northwest of Tobermory Ontario of the border of Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. The approximate GPS location 45°19'37.0"N, 81°44'7.4"W. The site is accessible by boat with a boat dock located at the east side of the Cove Island Site.
The Cove Island site contains a prominent lighthouse with several outbuilding structures, of which several are designated Federal Heritage Structures. On the western side of the island, the two buildings slated for removal (non-federal heritage structures) were constructed between 1971 and 1972. The buildings are single storey with a gable roof originally designed/constructed to house electrical and generation equipment. The building are constructed of wood framing clad with pre-fabricated asbestos cement panels forming the exterior walls and roof. The cladding is commonly known as Trafford Tile, named after the manufacturer. Each of the building foot prints are approximately 21 feet (6.40 m) by 13 feet (3.96 m) and has a foundation of a poured concrete slab on grade pad.
