Description of the requirement:
Health Canada (HC) / Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) –
Family violence (i.e. child maltreatment, intimate partner violence and senior abuse) is a public health concern recognized as a priority by the Minister of Health as it has a significant impact on the immediate and long-term negative physical and mental health of Canadians. To address family violence as a risk factor for the health of Canadians, the Public Health Agency of Canada (the Agency) works closely with its partners to establish a comprehensive surveillance system. The family violence surveillance section seeks to maintain its current surveillance activities as well as to expand surveillance by looking into existing, under-explored data sources within the Agency. These activities serve to guide the development of programs aimed at preventing and responding to family violence and improving the lives of Canadians.
To supplement the activities of the Agency staff, and to maintain current timelines, project support is required. Recently, the section has been tasked with developing a family violence indicator framework to inform the planning and development of all potential surveillance activities. This work will provide a cornerstone for surveillance planning and strategic efforts to improve the collection of family violence data. It will also serve to monitor progress of prevention and mitigation strategies in this area. In addition, the section is exploring other surveillance systems within the Agency that have family violence content. This would serve to foster the optimal use of under-utilized sources of family violence surveillance data and to support the integration of surveillance work within the Agency.
