In 2019, the Standards Council of Canada signed the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s (UNECE) Declaration for Gender Responsive Standards and Standards Development. SCC became one of the first signatories to develop a gender strategy. SCC has taken action to monitor the participation of women in standardization and conducted research demonstrating the negative effects of not including women in standardization. In recognition of Canada’s leadership in this area, SCC is leading diversity initiatives internationally at ISO/IEC and the UNECE to improve the gender responsiveness of standards. On this basis, SCC is well positioned to leverage the standardization system to assist the government in advancing diversity within Canada.
