Environment Canada operates an environmental monitoring station in Stephenville, Newfoundland. It is a research and monitoring station which forms part of Environment Canada’s national network of CAPMoN stations. The primary focus of this monitoring station is the weekly collection of mercury in precipitation samples. Data is collected via automated samplers. A contract operator is required to attend to the station to retrieve the mercury in precipitation samples weekly and package and ship them for analysis to the Analytical Laboratory in Seattle, Washington. Other daily duties include reading and recording of various gauges, diagnostics, and regular servicing, troubleshooting, and minor repair of the mercury in precipitation sampling system.
