The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is planning
to undertake an ecosystem baseline sampling survey (BREA
Offshore Fish program) in the offshore waters of the Beaufort
Sea in summer of 2012. The goal of this survey is to gather
knowledge in so far unsurveyed area. Samples of all crucial
ecosystem compartments will be collected from the fishing
trawler in summer 2012-2014.
Objectives of the Requirement
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Winnipeg needs to be
supplied with the bottom sampler- the box corer - to be used
during the summer 2012 cruise to the Beaufort Sea. The box corer
is used to collect cube-shaped samples of bottom sediment that
can be used for both abiotic (e.g. sediment grain analysis) and
biotic (e.g. biota in the sediment) studies. The box corer is
widely used as a primary tool for sediment sampling,
particularly at locations with greater depths (e.g. 500 m and
more) where other, usually lighter, sediment samplers become
unreliable. The box corer will be deployed from the vessel
equipped with a crane (or alternatively A-frame) and a winch.
The unit should be ready for at-sea operation during the
delivery.
Delivery required on or before September 30th, 2012. The
equipment is to be delivered to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
