Manufacturing is one of Canada’s most important economic sectors, evidenced by its contribution to GDP, imports, exports, research and development, and employment. It plays a critical role in the economic success of the entire country as well as each province. Global interest in manufacturing and its economic importance has increased since the end of the recent global financial crisis. Canada’s competitor countries are increasingly marketing and emphasizing the importance of their manufacturing sectors. Manufacturing investments, particularly those which originate from outside Canada can create jobs, transfer technology, spark innovation and provide small and medium enterprises (SME) suppliers with links to global manufacturing value chains.
Industry Canada is the centre of expertise on manufacturing within the federal government. The Department examines challenges facing firms and industries, and promotes sound policy and programming in support of the sector to encourage greater innovation and enhanced competitiveness.
