Background
Improving the quality of education in First Nations schools to
ensure better educational outcomes of First Nation (FN) students
living on reserve is a shared priority of both the Government of
Canada and First Nations. The quality of education can be
improved, in part, through the use of well designed and built
schools. Aborginal Affairs and Nothern Development Canada
(AANDC) has been working to explore innovative options to build
and renovate schools on reserves without delay while also
demonstrating value for money.
Although the size of each new school will vary, standardization
via a core functional design will be employed. The core design
will contain administration space, gymnasium, and community
space that is common to each community. In addition, it is
essential that the schools are designed for northern climates
and are designed to minimize maintenance costs over their life
span.
Please Note: Community Accessibility, the reserves are located
in northern locations and could only be accessible by winter
road or by aircraft when winter roads are not available.
