The National Research Council Canada has a requirement for a reliable high temperature tube furnace that can be used for characterization of sapphire fibre Bragg grating components (SFBGs) that are to operate at extreme temperatures up to 1800C
Background:
The Fibre Photonics Unit has invented a high temperature sensing technology called a sapphire fibre Bragg grating (SFBG) that can be used to optically monitor temperature and strain up to 2000 °C. This patented technology is of interest to our industrial clients in the energy and aerospace sectors.
These clients and potential licensees require data on stability of the spectral responses from our Bragg grating filters at these temperatures as well as characteristics of SFBG packaging.
This equipment will be used on a daily basis for industrial contracts and in the research and development of ultrafast laser based fiber Bragg grating sensors.
Presently the Fibre Photonics unit does not have the capability to heat and monitor SFBG performance above 1100 °C. Acquisition of this tube furnace will allow us to characterize and optimize SFBG sensor performance up to 1800 °C which is a requirement for our clients (Aerospace Portfolio NRC, Natural Resources Canada, National Energy Technology Laboratory (Department of Energy))
Constraints:
Equipment is needed to achieve specific milestones within the Sapphire Sensors project of the Quantum Photonics Sensing and Security Program within NRC as well as to fulfil certain obligations with collaborators. As it will be placed in a laboratory environment, it must be reliable, easy to use and adhere to the dimensional and weight requirements. Equipment needs to be delivered before the end of the fiscal year.
