INDUSTRY DAY INFORMATION SESSION on the GIANT MINE REMEDIATION
PROJECT, Yellowknife, NT.
Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) is hosting a
second Industry Day about the Giant Mine Remediation Project,
Wednesday, August 1, from 1:30pm to 5:30pm in the Katimavik B
room, at the Explorer Hotel in Yellowknife. The Department works
closely with its client, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern
Development (AANDC), and its client's co-proponent, the
Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) to develop
contracts for work carried out at the Giant Mine site.
Please register in advance (details below) for this year's
event, which, in part, will provide an update to the procurement
approach outlined at Industry Day in 2010. If there's enough
interest, an optional surface site tour will be provided, from
10am to 12:30pm, before the afternoon presentations begin.
Individuals and contractors unable to attend this session are
encouraged to submit company profiles (see below) which will be
shared with the Giant Mine Remediation Team (PWGSC, AANDC and
GNWT personnel).
This year's Industry session will provide participants with:
- highlights about the Giant Mine Remediation Project and
upcoming site activities;
- updates to the procurement approach since Industry Day 2010;
- information about doing business with the Government of Canada;
- an overview of GNWT programs and services aimed at Northwest
Territories' businesses;
- a chance for participants to influence the procurement
strategy, to share ideas and expertise;
- a forum for networking with local contractors and Aboriginal
and northern businesses; and
- an opportunity for attendees to ask questions about the
project and associated procurement plans to be better positioned
to participate in upcoming contracts and activities.

Background:
The Giant Mine located in Yellowknife, has been in operation
under several owners for approximately 56 years starting in
1948. In 1999, the owner of Giant Mine, Royal Oak Mines, went
into receivership. The Government of Canada has taken on the
responsibility of the existing environmental liabilities on the
property, including approximately 237,000 tonnes of arsenic
trioxide, stored in underground chambers. The Giant site is
currently in Care and Maintenance mode while the Remediation
Plan is undergoing an Environmental Assessment (EA). Following
the EA, it's anticipated a water license application will be
submitted. Contracts will be posted in the summer, fall and
winter months of this year. The implementation phase of the
clean-up and remediation program will have a number of
individual components including, the Freeze Program, Tailings
Cover, Baker Creek Alignment, Surface Water Management, Building
Demolition, Surface Openings and Pit Closures, Hazardous
Materials Disposal and Contaminated Soils.
A long-term contract for post-remediation activities will be
required for the construction and operation of a new Water
Treatment Plant, maintenance of the freeze system, site security
and monitoring. Post-remediation activities are expected for at
least 25 years or more.
