The National Research Council at the Dominion Radio
Astrophysical Observatory (NRC-DRAO) near Penticton British
Columbia Canada requires the design, fabrication and delivery of
2 molds suitable for making composite reflective antenna
surfaces using vacuum infusion. The mold shapes are
approximately sections of a parabolid, and elliptical in shape
overall . The first (primary) mold is approximately 15m x 18.5m
x 2m while the second (secondary) mold is approximately 4m x 2m
x 1m as shown in Figures* 1 and 3 respectively. The contractor
must design and build both molds to the specifications listed in
table 1 shown in section 2.0 and deliver the molds once factory
acceptance criteria have been completed to the satisfaction of
NRC. The molds will be delivered to NRC at the HIA-DRAO site
near Penticton, BC.

The molds must be of a quality suitable for the manufacture of
prototype composite parts. The molds must be made in pieces so
that they may be readily transported by truck to the NRC site.
The accuracy of the molds is very important. A CAD file of the
mold surface shape will be supplied to the vendor. The mold
surface must match that of supplied CAD file to high accuracy.
The mold surface must also be vacuum tight and sanded to a
smooth finish. The vendor among other things must design, supply
all materials, manufacture, and deliver the molds. The mold base
structure must be a steel frame construction of adequate
stiffness to ensure mold precision is maintained over the
specified temperature range as well as during shipping.
Alternate construction methodologies may be considered if they
are cost competitive and can be demonstrated to provide equal to
or better performance.

Each mold piece must incorporate precision bushings such that
metrology instruments may be used to align the mold pieces and
verify they meet specification. Each mold piece must have
machined mating surfaces with a groove for a vacuum seal where
mold pieces are to be joined, as indicated in figure 4. These
mating surfaces must also include a final layer of gelcoat that
is wide enough so a vacuum tight seal can be maintained.
Clearance holes and mating holes with T-nuts must be provided
along and adjacent to all mating surfaces to facilitate
fastening of mold pieces. The mold structure below these mating
surfaces must be relieved such that: a) it does not come into
contact with the base structure and b) it provides access to
mold supports for alignment purposes. Jacking screws must be
provided on the underside of the base structure to facilitate
alignment; the location of the jackscrews is to be determined by
the vendor to best support the mold. Access is to be provided
through the base structure to the mating surface bolts and
jacking screws.

Specifically, the requirement is to provide the following:
i. One Primary Reflector Mold Assembly
ii. One Secondary Reflector Mold Assembly

Schedule of Milestones:

  • Milestone 1 - Mold Design Complete: On or before 07-Jul-2012

  • Milestone 4 - Mold Shipping and Site Acceptance Complete: On

or before 22-Oct-2012 (MANDATORY) based on estimated lead time
of 19 weeks after contract award.

Assembly and set-up will be completed by NRC unless otherwise
required by Contractor in its bid.

A bid must comply with the requirements of the bid solicitation
and meet all mandatory technical evaluation criteria to be
declared responsive. The responsive bid with the lowest
evaluated price will be recommended for award of a contract.
