Nature of Requirements:
F6093-170015 DFO - Turbulence Profiler System
Definition of requirement:
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada in St. John’s, NL has a requirement for a loosely tethered vertical microstructure profiler system capable of measuring turbulence (dissipation rate of TKE within range [10-10 to 10-5]W/kg) using piezoceramic shear probes. The combined system must portable and capable of measuring fine-scale (decimetre scale) conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD). In addition, the instrument must be equipped with internal 3D acceleration sensors and be compatible with fast-response sensors capable of measuring the following variables at the micro-scale (order of cm): temperature, conductivity, fluorescence and optical backscatter. The entire system, including ancillary sensors, must be rated to a minimum of 1000 m depth and be equipped with a drag brush to ensure smooth and constant descent throughout the water column. The combined system must operate at a minimum frequency of 512Hz for turbulence sensors and have an internal data recording memory with a minimum of 4GB memory for onboard data storage. The instrument must be provided with all technical documentation and user manuals in both hard copy and disk formats. All equipment must be supplied in water-tight PVC shipping cases.
