The modernization of spaces at the Fisheries and Oceans Freshwater Institute at the University of Manitoba will address the reorganization of offices, scientific laboratories and laboratory support areas for key research programs for both DFO Science and Non-Science divisions. The project involves the renovation and fit-up of an existing facility of approximately 15,120 gross square meters (GSM). The Freshwater Institute (FWI) was constructed in 1972 on the University of Manitoba campus, within the south end of the city of Winnipeg. The Institute houses Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) programs. It is a national center of expertise in aquatic biology as well as freshwater and marine fisheries. In conjunction with the Bayfield Institute in Burlington, Ontario, FWI serves as a focal point of scientific research in the DFO Central and Arctic Regions, and for fisheries, fish habitat and oceans management programs.
