On July 2, 2025, the Government of Alberta announced that new Independent Agency Police Service, which was first introduced by the Public Safety Statutes Amendment Act, 2024, was created by regulation. The agency will assume functions currently carried out by the Alberta Sheriffs branch, which currently reports to the Alberta Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services. This means transitioning the police like functions the Sheriffs currently undertake to a police service, under the Police Act, which will enhance civilian oversight, transparency, and accountability.
The Independent Agency Police Service was also officially named the Alberta Sheriff Police Service (ASPS). The ASPS’s brand identity will be distinct from Government. The purpose of this project is to secure external creative services to develop the ASPS brand and identity, and associated products (website, communications templates, social media templates, corporate materials).
