GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This project involves the rehabilitation of the historic Burritts Rapids single lane Swing Bridge. The bridge extends over the Rideau Canal which is a UNESCO world heritage site adjacent to the Town of Burritts Rapids, Ontario. The structure is a through-truss bridge with a wood deck constructed in 1897 to replace the wood swing bridge that was believed to be constructed in the 1850’s. The masonry foundations are believed to have been constructed at the same time as the original wood bridge. The scope of the rehabilitation includes the removal and replacement of the wood deck, steel floor beams, the steel railway ties that makeup the counterweight, truss members identified for replacement, the wooden pedestrian railing, and the north load rail. The scope also includes the complete refurbishment of mechanical components, the complete repointing of the canal wall (above and below water), and the sand-blasting and painting of the entire swing bridge. The rehabilitation work will be completed with the roadway closed, and the bridge in the open position after the detour has been established. There will be a requirement to maintain pedestrian access through the construction site for the duration of work, while providing a temporary pedestrian bridge across the canal. The work described is to be completed outside of the navigation season over the winter of 2017/18, in order to have both the swing bridge and canal fully operational in the early spring of 2018.
