Environment and Climate Change Canada , National Hydrological Services, Water Survey of Canada (ECCC-NHS-WSC) Division was established in 1908 to provide water level and flow data to all Canadians. ECCC- NHS-WSC is the lead agency responsible for the collection, interpretation and dissemination of standardized water resource data and information in Canada . In partnership with the Provinces, Territories and other agencies, NHS-WSC operates over 2800 active hydrometric gauging stations across Canada . There are over 1000 active and discontinued gauging stations in the Alberta Hydrometric Network. ECCC-NHS-WSC is undertaking a review of the infrastructure within the Alberta Hydrometric Network to identify site locations that require either full or partial decommissioning. Gauging stations are located on either Crown Land or Private Land.
Scope of Work and Deliverables
Objective
The scope of the work is for either the full or partial decommissioning of hydrometric gauging stations, that are either in active use or locations that have been discontinued. Full decommissioning of a site location will involve remediation back to natural landscape conditions. Partial decommissioning will involve removal of infrastructure no longer required at a location.
Work to be Carried Out
The extent of construction services requested will vary depending on the scope and complexity of work to be performed at each gauging station location. In general, the scope of work is anticipated to include the supply of labour, equipment and travel for the following services, including but not limited to, the removal and disposal of creosote wells, small outbuildings, cableways, small weirs and accessory structures.
Location
There are over 1000 active and discontinued gauging stations located across Alberta. It is anticipated that there may be up to two hundred (200) locations in the far southern and mid-regions of Alberta that will require some level of decommissioning. It is not anticipated that any work will be conducted in the northern regions or Fort McMurray area of Alberta, with the exception of small areas between Peace River and Grande Prairie. Some locations are in the foothills portions of Alberta in winter road closure areas. All of the gauging stations are located on either Crown Land or Private Land.
Site Infrastructure
A typical ECCC-NHS-WSC gauging station installation may consist of the following components:
Gauging shelter, consisting of a 5’ x 5’ walk in shelter located on
A concrete pad, or
An in-bank, large diameter (52”) well and associated intake pipes
May have a hydro or A/C power connection and/or telephone service
Steel fall restraint structure inside the gauging shelter
A cableway crossing a river or creek
Other accessory structuresfences, stairs, guard rails, catwalks or small metering bridges
An in-stream control structure or weir (small scale)
