The Astronomy Technology Research Group at the Dominion Radio
Astrophysical Observatory Penticton, BC has developed a design
and manufacturing process for construction of large (10-20 m)
diameter parabolic reflectors for radio telescopes. The
Composite Application for Radio Telescopes (CART) project is
part of NRC's contribution to the international Square Kilometre
Array (SKA) project.
The Single-piece Rim-supported Composite (SRC) reflector
technology developed by NRC and demonstrated in the DVA1 dish
structure has been selected as the baseline design solution for
the SKA project dishes contingent on the demonstration of the
ability to fabricate a reflector with higher surface accuracy.
This must be demonstrated within a 4 month time period in order
to meet the SKA project schedule. If the fabrication of a
reflector at DRAO is successful, then a second reflector would
need to be erected in South Africa in early 2016. A temporary
building that can be erected in a short time on the DRAO site
and can be disassembled and possibly relocated to the South
African site is required.
This work consists of the lease, delivery and assembly of a
portable building structure to the DRAO site in Penticton. The
initial period is estimated to be for four months, with the
possibility of extending.
The work also consists of the complete initial installation of
the structure at the DRAO site in Penticton, BC, including
training of NRC staff on the assembly and disassembly process.
The Project Authority will also have the option to request the
contractor to conduct the complete disassembly at the DRAO site
in Penticton.
The Scope of any additional work, pending the outcome of the
initial project, will be subject to the issuance of a Task
Authorization(s), and may include the following:
1. shipping of the same portable structure or one meeting the
same requirements to/from South Africa;
2. delivery and installation in South Africa (specific location
to be determined);
3. the ongoing lease in Canada and/or South Africa; and
4. any repair and maintenance required.
The requirement includes an option to purchase the portable
structure outright at any time during the contract period.
Delivery Date: Above-mentioned
