The University of Calgary (UCalgary) intends to purchase the Thermogravimeter Discovery TGA 550 with Autosampler and the support plan from TA Instruments – Waters LLC. The TGA 550 is a research grade thermogravimeter that will enable users to study kinetics of thermal changes of asphalt and crude oil. This will be beneficial for the optimization of the production of asphalt from crude oil. The UCalgary Civil Engineering Department currently has a TGA unit and will upgrade to the new TGA 550 system, which will enable the department to study kinetics of thermal changes of asphalt and crude oil. This is to ensure compatibility with the existing FTIR system to combine thermogravimetric analysis with the identification power of an FTIR spectrometer. Additionally, the new system is compatible with the existing lab space, eliminating the need for any changes to the current infrastructure while minimizing the learning curve for adopting the new system.
