Full description

The University of Calgary (UCalgary) intends to purchase the K5 - Wearable Metabolic Technology along with a 3 year all-inclusive service coverage, for a CFI funded research program. The proposed research requires the collection of high-resolution metabolic data during real-world locomotor and subsistence activities performed outside of a laboratory setting, specifically in remote rainforest environments.
The core scientific objective is to quantify the energetic cost of walking and physically demanding daily tasks under naturalistic conditions, and to integrate those metabolic measurements with simultaneous biomechanical and physiological data streams, including inertial measurement units (IMUs), electromyography (EMG), and other portable sensors. This research requires real-time, breath-by-breath metabolic data collection during naturalistic locomotor and subsistence activities in remote rainforest environments, while also integrating with other biomechanical and physiological data streams.
The COSMED K5 portable metabolic system is uniquely suited to this project because it combines research-grade indirect calorimetry with fully portable, field-deployable design, enabling accurate measurement of real-time energy expenditure during naturalistic activities in remote environments.
It is the University’s understanding, based on supplier documentation provided to date, that COSMED is the sole authorized Canadian distributor for the K5 - Wearable Metabolic Technology.
