Defence R & D Canada Suffield has a requirement for a complete
Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) system to verify prototype
patterns prior to active testing. Many of these pieces involve
complex curves obtained via equations of several exponential
degrees and cannot be checked with simple radii. Parts are
typically dish shaped or conical in a variety of sizes.
Occasionally, parts tested through failure are reverse
engineered using the CMM to provide pattern details used in
modelling programs.
MINIMUM MANDATORY SPECIFICATIONS:
1 Minimum range must equal or exceed 600mm x 500mm x 300mm
(xyz), especially in the Z direction to accommodate deeper
profiles - x and y values may be interchanged.
2 Minimum resolution must be better than 0.001 mm (0.000 04"),
with high repeatability and protected, non-contact scales.
3 Movement must have ability to lock each axis individually, and
fine adjustment capability is required on the two major axes as
a minimum.
4 CMM must be mounted on its own granite working base, with
built in method to secure the test piece (tool slots or threaded
holes), including a dedicated support stand.
5 Must include manual indexing head and touch trigger probe or
combination, and include both spherical-end and point-end styli
of minimum 25mm working length
6 Unit must include dedicated computer system with all
associated components and cables (monitor(s), keyboard, mouse
etc.) with software pre-installed and tested
7 Monitor must be a minimum 19" diagonal
8 PC unit must have current components (power supply, processor,
memory, hard drive, USB port) with capability exceeding the
minimum requirement of the software
9 Software must be of geometric measurement specialty, capable
of creating a part-based coordinate system, memorizing measuring
patterns/procedures for multiple part comparison or checking.
10 Software must include option package capable of using curve
equations and/or CAD drawings for part measurements and
comparisons.
11 Contractor must provide on-site assembly, perform testing and
system certification prior to acceptance of the unit.
12 On-site training required for 1-3 personnel for both CMM and
software
13 If movement is motor driven, unit MUST have collision
avoidance in software AND auto stop upon touch probe contact in
any direction.
14 If movement is mechanical (ground ways and bearings), these
must be covered and/or protected from dust and debris. If
movement is via air bearings, unit must include either its own
clean air supply OR conditioning system to meet bearing
requirements.
