The Digital Forensics Unit (DFU), within the Criminal Investigations Division provides the technical expertise in the acquisition, processing, and analysis of digital devices in support of the CBSA’s criminal investigations mandate. The DFU consists of DFIs spread across 12 labs nationally. DFIs provide subject matter expertise on the extraction of digital evidence for criminal prosecutions and as such require continuously training in digital forensic techniques, tradecraft, and software in order to keep pace with changing digital technology and be credible court-certified experts. Digital devices and media are frequently encountered at ports of entry and during inland search warrant activities. These devices often contain significant quantities of evidence that are essential to successful enforcement and/or criminal prosecutions. Apple devices such as Apple MacBooks and iPhones are some of the numerous items that DFIs seize.
