TITLE : ASSEMBLY CODE DATA MINING
1 Background
To assess information systems for reliability, integrity, and
vulnerability, as well as to understand and detect malware,
analysis is required. As malware authors seldom do the favor of
providing the source code of their creations, current analysis
techniques rely on software reverse engineering, a manually
intensive and time-consuming process. The objective of software
reverse engineering is to determine the functionality of a
program by taking the program's executable binary and generating
textual files that contain the equivalent assembly code. Reverse
engineering is further complicated by the necessary translation
of assembly code into a series of abstractions that represent
the overall flow of a program. Most of the steps involve finding
interesting areas of an executable through an overwhelming
amount of information and determining their overall
functionality.
Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) wants to create
new data mining techniques, together with their associated
theoretical foundations, algorithms, and tools. The goal is to
analyze large data sets of assembly code generated through the
reverse engineering process and address the current limitations
of DRDC prototypes.
