The Department of National Defence requires a robust infrared
(IR) tactical airfield lighting support system for deployed and
local NVG flying operations.
8 Air Communication and Control Squadron (8 ACCS) has the
ability to install IR lenses on the existing Emergency Airfield
Lighting System (EALS) to establish a temporary, relocatable
tactical landing zone. However, the existing EALS system
requires significant equipment, personnel and logistical support
to enable NVG training in an IR configuration. It is not
practical to conduct frequent NVG training missions using the
existing EALS equipment across a variety of airfield locations.
OBJECTIVE
The Canadian Forces requires a rapidly deployable, remote
controlled, battery operated, IR/NVG-compatible lighting system
to abate the shortcomings inherent in the existing EALS kit.
