TITLE : INFRARED DETECTOR ARRAY FOR A FOURIER TRANSFORM INFRARED
IMAGING SPECTROMETER
Summary
The PIRATES hyperspectral imaging spectrometer developed at DRDC
Valcartier uses an 8x8 elements focal plane array detector made
of Indium Antimony (InSb) to measure spectra of infrared
radiation in the mid-infrared region of the electromagnetic
spectrum (typically from 1.9 to 5.4 µm).
The detector array currently used in PIRATES is a custom design
made more than ten years ago by Cincinnati Electronics. The
array is made of 64 individual sensors each one being connected
to its own pre-amplifier. Being not CCD coupled, this
particular design can support large dynamic range and high speed
data collection. The 8x8 array was chosen to optimise the
sensitivity, the fill factor and the number of elements.
Globally, the scope of the work is to fabricate five (5) focal
plane array detectors with 64 (8x8) Indium Antimonite (InSb)
individual sensor elements that are compatible with the PIRATES
family of instruments. Three (3) of the five (5) focal plane
array detectors must be integrated into a Dewar with a Stirling
cooler unit. It must maintain the PIRATES instrument
performance and must be made according to the technical
specifications stated in the Statement of Work.
In order to be manageable, the work has been divided into three
interdependant phases which will lead to their own deliverables.
Phase 1 will deliver the design specification. Phase 2
(optional) which delivers the selected array FPA chips will be
exercised after Phase 1 completion and when budget is available.
Similarly, Phase 3 (optional) which delivers the complete
detector units will be exercised after Phase 2 completion and
when budget is available.
