The objective of this work is to construct spillway models for testing turbulent flow over three different spillway designs, representing conditions downstream migrating fish may need to negotiate. The work comprises of the following: a) conduct velocity measurements using a high-speed particle image velocimetry system; b) perform comprehensive analysis of the velocity data to understand the hydraulic characteristics; c) and assess how changes in hydraulic conditions, especially turbulence, affects swimming behavior and movement of downstream migrating fish. This work requires that the contractor works in close contact with DFO and other research scientists to design the specific spillway geometries to be tested, analyse and interpret collected data, contribute to improved understanding of spillway turbulent flows and swimming behavior of fish, write a comprehensive report and create a repository of databases that will enable research engineers and scientists to develop accurate three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics models for understanding the hydraulic conditions at spillways and other bypass entrances which favour downstream fish migration.
