Nature of Requirements:
1. TITLE:
Effect Of Diesel Exhaust Exposure On Pre-Symptomatic Biomarker Diagnostic Candidates Of Acute Infection
2. SECURITY:
There is no security requirement associated with the requirement.
3. REQUIREMENT:
Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) - Suffield Research Centre has an on-going project evaluating presymptomatic host response biomarkers of acute infection for use in rapid tests that could be used by operational communities to rapidly screen exposed individuals or suspect cases for post-exposure triage, treatment and medical intervention, and which can be analyzed in a hand-held or field deployable device. Microarray studies have identified a number of potential biomarker candidates that are up-regulated early in infection with viral and bacterial pathogens, and these biomarker candidates need to be assessed for suitability for inclusion on a diagnostic panel. Of major concern is the elimination of biomarkers that are up-regulated by other mediators of inflammation that could potentially result in false positive results. Diesel exhaust is a significant contributor to air pollution, through generation of nitrogen oxides and particulate materials. Diesel exhaust is known to trigger an inflammatory response, and individuals with underlying asthma, a chronic disease involving inflammation of the airway, are more susceptible to the adverse health effects of air pollution. Exposure to diesel exhaust is prevalent among members of the Canadian Armed Forces, our major client, thus evaluation of exposure to diesel exhaust on the identified biomarker candidates is necessary to rule out those that could result in false positive results.
