OBJECTIVES OF THE REQUIREMENT
To engage the services of a registered psychological services firm to conduct clinical psychological assessments in order to determine suitability to carry out and use non-lethal and lethal force equipment (including firearm), and safely carry out enforcement duties.
BACKGROUND
Psychological testing is a critical step for assessing potential candidates for a career in law enforcement. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO)-Conservation and Protection (C&P) uses psychological assessments as part of the recruitment processes to ensure that potential new Fishery Officers are emotionally and psychologically suited to carry out and use non-lethal and lethal force equipment (including firearm), and safely carry out enforcement duties.
Psychological testing is also use to assess Canadian Coast Guard personnel before they can partake in Armed Boarding Training and to re-assess Fishery Officers who have been away from enforcement duties for more than 24 months or have suffered emotional stress.
The assessments or re-assessments are used to identify possible judgment or behavioural issues which may negatively affect an individual`s ability to exercise sound judgment in enforcement situations, and in particular where use of force may be required.
