Government of Canada Award for Corporate Leadership in Women’s Advancement
DESCRIPTION OF REQUIREMENT:
Background:
Budget 2018 committed to supporting corporate inclusion by publicly recognizing corporations that are committed to promoting women, including minority women, to senior management positions and boards of directors.
Budget 2018 underscored the Government’s commitment to support corporate diversity and inclusion by publicly recognizing corporations that are committed to promoting women, including minority women, irrespective of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, and disabilities, to senior management positions and boards of directors. Budget 2018 committed as such to create an annual award for Canadian corporations demonstrating leadership in this area.
While there has been increased representation of women in the work force since the 1950s, it is widely recognized that there has been limited progress towards gender equality at the senior management level across Canadian corporations. Gender diversity at senior management levels is important not only to women; it also has numerous benefits for organizations, including increased availability of skilled employees, stronger employee engagement and financial performance, higher productivity, increased innovation, and more effective decision-making at the board level. The Government of Canada has emphasized, through legislation and funding, that promoting gender equality in the workplace and encouraging greater diversity in Canada’s corporate leadership is a priority.
The creation of the Government of Canada Award for Corporate Leadership in Women’s Advancement (award) builds on the Government’s aforementioned legislative and funding commitments aimed at enhancing gender equality and corporate inclusion. The award will be delivered in partnership with the private sector, and will build on existing initiatives to recognize diversity, inclusion, and women’s advancement in the workplace. The award will support the federal government’s priorities by:
Publicly recognizing corporations committed to promoting women, including minority women, to senior management positions and boards of directors.
Supporting the adoption of best practices in diversity and inclusion by featuring award recipients’ key achievements in furthering women’s advancement on a publicly accessible website.
