Algal Blooms
The Great Lakes Nutrient Initiative (GLNI) will contribute to the development of a bi-national assessment and management framework to address the key nutrients that are linked to the increase in harmful and nuisance algal blooms (HNABs). Developing a management framework will utilize a socio-economic impact assessment of HNABs for the Lake Erie Basin. This socio-economic impact assessment will provide insight on the costs of HNABs under three different scenarios of phosphorus loads into Lake Erie.
The specific objectives of this study are:
1. Estimate the contribution of the ecological goods & services provided by Lake Erie to the Ontario portion of the Lake Erie Basin Economy (Ontario portion), specifically the socio-economic sectors described in the attached scoping report. This will serve as the baseline for the two scenarios
2. Estimate the incremental economic costs caused by an increase in nuisance and harmful algal blooms in terms of the total economic value of the EG&S provided by Lake Erie using an EG&S approach.
3. Estimate the proportionate impact of changes in Lake Erie’s EG&S on the relevant economic sectors and stakeholders as outlined in the Scoping Report.
The proposed contract will be from the date of contract award, approximately 22 September 2014 to 01 March 2015. The maximum budget allocated for this project shall not exceed $95,000.00 (HST extra).
