Work Description:
Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is looking for experienced contractors to replace 47 variously sized valves and 14 curb stops with associated drains at the Kitimat River Hatchery. The existing hatchery was constructed in the early 1980’s along with the installation of the water piping and valves. Many of the existing valves are currently not operational and are freezing underground, resulting in damage to the above ground operation.
The valves are used to service the raceways where the hatchery rear Chinook, Steelhead, Chum, and Coho. Each raceway was designed for a specific type of salmon and can hold adults and juvenile salmon during various phases of the salmon’s life cycle.
The scope of work for this project consists of the removal and replacement of forty-six (46) butterfly valves ranging in size from 75mm to 500mm, one (1) 19mm corporation stop and fourteen (14) 19mm curb stop drains with service boxes. Details of the existing valves along with the proposed materials for replacement are included in the contract drawings and in the quantities table below. The scope of work includes all of the associated valve operators, riser and floor boxes/stands. The valves are all located at significant depths between two (2) to four (4) meters below the existing asphalt and adjacent to the existing hatchery building and concrete rearing ponds. Special attention should be paid to the location of the existing valves when evaluation this tender and to the requirements set out for trenching and excavation support outlined by the Geotechnical Engineering package.
