VMware, the company, was purchased by Broadcom, which is doing business as VMware International Unlimited Company. Although ongoing licenses can still be renewed through authorized resellers, Broadcom prefers to leverage a direct business model with the customer, and offers the best price when purchasing from them. Changing to another software solution is not realistic, as the migration cost of moving to another platform would be significantly higher than the cost of licensing the VMware software and it would require an excessive amount of labour hours, and an unrealistic timeline, to complete. The department will purchase the VMware licensing directly from Broadcom to realize the best possible price, resulting in savings for the University.
