To supply one (1) Phantom V1610 high speed camera complete with
fast option upgrade, 512GB Cinemag and Cinestation for Defence
R&D Canada (DRDC), Suffield, Ralston, AB. Delivery is desirable
by 31 August 2014.
Sole Source Justification:
Cameras from alternative sources are not compatible with a large
existing inventory of cables, power supplies and other
accessories. Other cameras are also incompatible with the
software currently used within the Photo Group.
DRDC Suffield presently has an inventory of thirteen Phantom
cameras of various models worth about $1.2 million. DRDC has
these cameras along with a large number of lenses, laptops with
the necessary software, extra cables, power supplies, custom
built protective enclosures, lens mounts, etc. It is necessary
that the cameras are compatible with these.
The Phantom cameras use proprietary software, cables, power
supplies, etc. that are not compatible with any other cameras.
These accessories are also interchangeable with the different
Phantom camera models. The advantages of having compatible
software and interchangeable cables, lenses, and accessories in
the field where setups are relocated and reconfigured on a daily
basis, cannot be overstated. Camera parameters and
configurations are adjusted continuously during the course of a
trial. Having a consistent work flow is paramount to avoid
costly mistakes and irreplaceable data loss. Protective housings
and unique camera mounts for many different purposes? underwater
explosive trials, vehicle interior mine protection trials, large
munitions trials, etc? have been constructed, at great time and
effort, to conform with the Phantom cameras
Minimum Specifications Required and Unique to Phantom Cameras:
1) Fast exposure times from 1 millisecond to as fast as 300
nanoseconds.
These fast exposure times are beneficial for capturing fast and
bright events at very high framing rates. If an event is too
bright fine details may be lost, being able to expose for a very
short period of time prevents that loss of detail.
2) Cinemag removable storage allows for up to 512 GB of storage
space in non-volatile memory. The Cinemag allows footage to be
saved 10x faster than normal downloading to a PC. This allows
for faster turn around and less down time between shots
3) The footage on a Cinemag can be viewed directly from a camera
or downloaded with the Cinestation that allows a 10GB Ethernet
Connection. This fast connections allows for quicker download
times and as before less down time.
4) Segmented memory, allows for numerous recordings with one
camera so that each recording does not take up the full memory.
For slower high-speed shots this feature is helpful in keeping
files sizes down, and decreases down time between shots.
5) Image based trigger is offered through the Phantom Software.
A certain percentage of change in pixels can be selected and
when that threshold is met the camera will trigger. Great for
times where normal instrumentation based or audio triggers are
not available.
6) Each camera is capable of syncing with one another (Fsync).
This option allows cameras used in a group to be properly synced
together so numerous points of view have the same in and out
Vision Research is the sole manufacturer and seller of Phantom
cameras. ITM Instruments Inc. is the sole distributer for
Vision Research in Canada.
