Nature of Requirements:
Pyrolyzer GC-MS/FID
1. Purpose of an Advance Contract Notice (ACAN)
An Advance Contract Award Notice (ACAN) allows department and
agencies to post a notice, for no less than fifteen (15)
calendar days, indicating to the supplier community that it
intends to award a goods, service or construction contract to a
pre-identified supplier. If no other supplier submits, on or
before the closing date, a Statement of Capabilities that meets
the requirements set out in the ACAN, the contracting authority
may then proceed with the award. However, should a Statement of
Capabilities be found to meet the requirements set out in the
ACAN, then the contracting officer will proceed to a full
tendering process.
2. Definition of requirements and sole source justification
The Geological Survey of Canada Calgary requires an integrated
Pyrolyzer-GC-MS/FID facility to carry out the analysis of
hydrocarbons hosted in shales and other rock samples under the
GEM and GNES programs. It gives the GSC-C the ability to
characterize shale petroleum reservoirs by thermally desorbing
volatile and semi-volatile hydrocarbons or decomposing kerogen
in rock samples loaded in the pyrolyzer, and directly
transferring the liberated hydrocarbons from the pyrolyzer into
the GC-MS/FID system to identify and quantify those petroleum
components as well as the effects of kerogen and bitumen
pore-fillings on reservoir performance.
Key analysis of shale samples would be light to medium
hydrocarbons in the range of C5 to C20.
The entire system must be provided by single vendor on a single
proposal and must
meet the minimum requirements outlined below:
Pyrolyzer Mandatory Specifications
The following are the minimum specifications for a Pyrolyzer and
its accessories:
1) The pyrolyzer must consist of a ceramic micro furnace design
with a temperature reproducibility of +/- 0.1 C and able to be
operated in a temperature-programmable mode in the range 30C
(ambient + 1C) to 850C, so that it can be utilized for both
programmed and flash mode thermal desorption (TD) and/or
pyrolysis (Py) as well. As such, filament or Curie Point type of
pyrolyzers are not acceptable for our applications.
2) The pyrolyzer must be able to be mounted directly into the
GC inlet system with no external transfer lines and with an
interface that is settable from 40C to 350C, in order to
minimize cold-spot/zone effect on the GC analysis of the
thermally desorbed or pyrolyzed material. The GC-MS/FID system
to be interfaced with the pyrolyzer will identify and quantify
the liberated components from the pyrolyzer.
3) With a short deactivated analytical column installed in the
GC-MSDIFID system, the pyrolyzer must be able to be operated to
perform evolved gas analysis (EGA) on geological samples so
thermally desorbed and pyrolyzed organic components can be
analyzed and quantified quickly.
4) The pyrolyzer must have the capability of performing
multiple-step thermal analysis on the same sample and preserving
the sample at ambient temperature after each step or
temperature-point of thermal treatment.
5) The pyrolyzer should be equipped with an AutoShot sampler to
automate the multistep thermal analysis without human
intervention as well as to enable the pyrolyzer to analyze
multiple samples automatically so the analysis can be carried
out to the maximum efficiency.
6) The pyrolyzer must be equipped with an On-line
micro-reaction sampler. With this device, a source rock or
isolated organic fossil sample loaded in a
micro-scale-sealedvessel (MSSV) can be pyrolyzed in the
pyrolyzer furnace itself or in a standalone oven at specified
temperatures for certain duration and then are subjected to
thermal desorption on the pyrolyzer followed by GC-MSD/FID
analysis. This type of MSSV-TD-GC-MS/FID analysis can generate
data on various hydrocarbon components as kinetic inputs for
basin modeling and hydrocarbon resource assessment.
7) A MicroJet Cryo-trap must also be supplied with the
pyrolyzer to be installed in the GC oven so the thermally
liberated hydrocarbon components can be focused as a narrow band
in the pre-column for pulse-launch into the analytical capillary
column so that maximum peak resolution can be achieved for the
GC analysis.
8) A Selective Sampler must be included for the pyrolyzer to
enable the capture of hydrocarbon components liberated at any
selected temperature ranges and its transfer to the GC-MS/FID
system for further analysis.
9) The pyrolyzer software must be capable of controlling all
set points of the pyrolyzer and the auto-shot sampler; must have
a graphical display that dynamically indicates where the sample
cup is during a sequence and display actual and set point
temperatures during a run; must be compatible with the GC-MS/FID
software systems; and must also be capable of controlling the
following modes of operation:
Evolved Gas Analysis (EGA)
Multiple-point Thermal Desorption (TD)
Multiple-point Pyrolysis (PY)
Reactive Pyrolysis (RxPY)
Heart-cuts based on the EGA thermo grams
Sorbent-based thermal desorption
High pressure-high temperature reaction chemistry
Gas Chromatography-Mass SpectrometrylFlame Ionization Detection
(GC-MS/FID) System Specifications:
1) The GC-MS/FID system must be compatible with the pyrolyzer
system, both hardware and software.
2) Gas chromatograph must have an oven operating range from
ambient temperature +4C to 450C
3) The GC must be fitted with a split/splitless injector so the
amount of sample loaded into the capillary column can be
fine-tuned.
4) The GC must have electronic pressure control and be able to
control inlet and detector gases to the nearest 0.001 psi.
5) The GC must have clock time programmability to allow a user
to have the instrument come on at a specified time, and be at
operating temperature and stable when use is required.
6) A CTC GC-PAL liquid injector and all associated software and
hardware must also be supplied.
7) In addition to the Mass Spectrometer (MS), the GC must be
fitted with an FID detector (optimised for capillary columns)
and allow for the addition of 1 additional GC detector such as a
TCD, ECD, NPD, FPD or DFPD, so that both identification using MS
and accurate quantification using FID can be achieved.
8) For safety reasons, the GC must have an automatic shut-down
for hydrogen carrier gas when a pressure or flow measurement
indicates the possibility of a leak. It must have an oven
explosion protection built into the oven door.
9) The GC must have available a Gas Phase microfluidics
capability to provide automated Dean's Switching, effluent
splitting between the mass spectrometer and another detector or
the ability to change the column without venting the mass
spectrometer. The fitting should be leak-tight material and
design.
10) The MS system must be a bench-top turbo single quadruple
mass spectrometer with an EI source capable of being operated in
both full scan and selective ion monitoring (SIM) modes and be
able to scan from 1.6 to 1050 u. It must be capable of automatic
SIM/Scan method setup.
11) The Mass Spectrometer shall have an electronic scan rate of
12,500 u/sec and at the increments of 0.1 u for better mass
resolution.
12) The MS must have a mode of operation that enables collection
of both SIM data and full scan data in the same acquisition
cycle.
13) The mass spectrometer must utilize a Quadrupole Mass Filter
consisting of a monolithic quartz structure and be able to be
independently heated from 100-200 C
14) The mass spectrometer must use an ion source in which the
metallic parts are constructed from an inert material and which
can be programmed up to 350C.
15) The GC-MS/FID system must be supplied with a software that
must include a complete data processing package capable of:
Automated peak location based on expected peak width and a
signal-to-noise threshold.
Automated peak area calculations based on automated combination
of modulated peak slices.
Analyte calibration software that can generate single and
multi-order calibration curves.
Automated analyte quantification.
The ability to construct reference tables of known sample types.
The ability to automatically compare samples to the reference
tables to quickly produce filtered lists of differences between
the samples as well as similarities.
Automated data export in a variety of electronic formats
including ANDII and ASCII formats.
9) The GC-MS/FID system must to be the same as or a higher model
than one of the GC-MS systems already installed at the
GSC-Calgary so the results generated on the new system can be
compared with those from at least one of the current ones. In
addition, this will enable the new GC-MS/FID system to be able
to be used as a backup for one of the current GC-MS instruments
to generate similar accessible and comparable analytical results.
Miscellaneous
all cables, tubing, power cords and fittings required for
installation and operation must be included along with complete
operation and maintenance manuals.
specify site requirements.
the system must have at least a one year warranty beginning on
the date of acceptance of the system by the site authority.
all prices must include delivery to, and installation in the
Geological Survey of Canada laboratory in Calgary and also the
cost of on-site training in set-up, maintenance and operation of
the system at the time of installation.
all equipment must be CSA approved
EGA/PY 3030D pyrolyzer, manufactured by Frontier Lab of Japan
and supplied through its sales representative in Western Canada
of K'Prime Technologies Inc is the only pyrolyzer in the market
that can perform all the following analysis:
A) Both programed and flash-point thermal desorption and
pyrolysis as well on solid materials including source rock and
reservoir rock samples;
B) Multiple step of thermal analysis on a sample while having
the sample preserved at ambient condition between thermal
treatments;
C) Qualitative and quantitative multiple heartcut analysis of
any temeprature range of the EGA (evolved gas analysis) peaks by
coupling to a GC-MS/FID system with the assistance of a
selective sampler and micro-jet cryo trap installed with the GC;
D) MSSV-TD-GC-MS/FID analysis on source rock and isolated
kerogens or other organic fossils;
E) All the thermal analysis being able to be automated with the
assistance of a auto-sampler and Software.
The EGA/PY 3030D pyrolyzer has to be interfaced to a GC-MS/FID
analytical instrument so the thermally desorbed and/or
pyrolyzed/decomposed hydrocarbons can be analyzed for their
molecular composition and quantity. The selection of the
GC-MSD/FID system is based on the requirement by the EGA/PY
3030D pyrolyzer and the compatibility of the GC-MSD/FID system
with other GC-MS systems already installed at the GSC-Calgary in
terms of hardware, software and result comparability. To the
best of our knowledge, the Agilent 7890A-5975C GC-MSD/FID single
quadruple mass spectrometer is the only GC-MS system meeting all
the specifications and can produce similar data formats to those
that already exist at GSC-C. In addition, K'Prime Technologies
Inc is also the sales and technical services representative for
Agilent Technologies' GC-MSD/ FID system in Western Canada, and
thus can supply the complete Pyrolyzer-GC-MS/FID and Autosampler.
Delivery must be no later than March 31, 2013. Earlier is better.
