Background
Enviroment Canada (EC)- Pacific Environmental Science Centre
(PESC) has been operational since November 1995. The Marine
Water Quality Monitoring Program operates within the centre and
fulfills its mandate for the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation
Program (CSSP) within the Pacific and Yukon Region. The
laboratory component of the Marine Water Quality Monitoring
Program requires large amounts of sterile bacteriological media,
glassware and plastic ware which are used in the microbiological
analyses of samples collected from marine water, fresh water and
wastewater environments. Microbiological results are used for
shellfish growing water classification recommendations.
The program currently has two different sterilizer models. One
model was recently purchased and installed during the spring of
2011. This unit is fully operational. The second model was put
into service in 1996 and is still operational though considered
obsolete from a maintenance point of view as essential
mechanical parts are either unavailable or soon to be
unavailable. In addition, the second models electronic control
features are no longer available for purchase. This means that
if the second model suffers a fatal error in its main control
board, the machine cannot be repaired. It is for these reasons
that a new sterilizer is required.
Objective
To obtain and seismically install a stand-alone Gravity/Vacuum
Steam Sterilizer at the EC - Pacific Environmental Science
Centre within room B112 for the Marine Water Quality Monitoring
